Summer has a habit of sneaking up on me, but it really was a shock to look at the calendar and count a mere 2 and 1/2 weeks until our school break. Less for the high schooler. There is still such a chill in the weather that confuses my sense of time, but the other night felt like pure summer. The kids played outside with their own made up games and the air was filled with laughter. That is, of course, the way one likes to think of summer. With 5 kids at home, it isn't always so.
Some preparations have been made: new swings, hammock, sand toys, hula hoops, shade umbrella, bubbles and craft supplies are all ready to go. We'll pick up a few new chapter books, and try to stock the house with food and toilet paper and soap and laundry detergent. But I sense a shift. Most of the kids can now read on their own, make their own beds, help with many a chore...I feel like some summer traditions will end and new ones be able to begin...and I am looking forward to it. Cautiously.
