Summer Roundup

I have been trying to capture weekly portraits of our baby during his first year, because the changes are so many and go so quickly and a parent is often a little too sleep deprived to appreciate it.  But it does not mean that I love my other children any less, even if they appear here in this space less frequently.  In fact, I'm often overcome with how much they too are are growing and changing and maturing...but their lives are becoming their own and it gets difficult to capture that and share that here.

Yet as summer comes to a close this year, I'd like to take a little time and catch just a bit of it...
While I'm waxing nostalgic and before all the hubbub of the start of school overwhelms me.

The Oldest
Worked his first summer job and went off to high school last week.
He has handled well the added pressure of being the oldest and is a tremendous help with family life.
He's kind and responsible and funny...and will always be my baby.
I am so proud of the man he is becoming.

The Pretty One
Don't hate me for that.  She's been called 'a pretty little girl' by others forever and it always made me cringe...
But she has the brightest smile (and got the first segment of orthodontics off this summer)
and the warmest heart and is beautiful inside and out.  She bounced right back from a major surgery in the spring and heads off to middle school this week.  Middle school.  My heart aches thinking about it.
She can be a 'pleaser' -- and every day I hope she gains a little more confidence to do the right thing even when it doesn't make everyone happy...and to recognize that she is so much more than just pretty.

The Smart One
Bright eyed and curious, everything seems to come quickly to this one.
We end up expecting quite a lot of her, but I hope she is always able to connect with and appreciate her humor and goofiness...and know her beauty.

The Wild One
Never afraid to stand up for herself, this one is a spitfire.
I am amazed at how she has taken to school, to her role of big sister.
She was always the first to jump on morning chores and often looking to help.
I can't believe what a lady she is becoming...and how tall.

The Baby
He has grown so much this year, formed into such a little person instead of a baby.
It makes me a little teary just to type that.
Scooting, pulling up, putting his opinions into the fray with his squawks and screeches...he will always have so many people looking out for him.  That is perhaps sometimes a blessing and sometimes a curse.
Off into a room of 'his own'--or one shared with a sibling--but no longer at the foot of my bed.
It makes me a little teary to type that too.

He has big shoes to fill but wonderful footsteps to follow in his older siblings.
We are very blessed.

What a lovely tribe! I was a little worried about having my littlest after a 7 year gap, but it's been beautiful to watch the rapport between him and his older brothers blossoming and growing, so special.

What a gorgeous bunch they are, both in pictures and personalities - but that littlest boy of yours is a scene stealer every time :)
